West Texas | You can make the farm pay, if you're willing to sweat for it.
With the ground you have, you should consider specialty crops, something that is in short supply and people are paying through the nose for. You'll have to do your homework, identifying that niche that fits you and your farm, but it *can* be done.
Hay, though, probably not. UNLESS, you establish yourself as a seed grower for some grass seed or alfalfa seed company in your area. Then, you'll need that hay stuff just to remove the residue. The hay will be low quality, but it will make a nice secondary income.
