Iowa | Same as everyone else said. Initially when they are in the cotyledon stage (two early leaves) they should be moved to lots of light (florescent lights 6am - 10pm about 1" above the plants) and cool temps. Mid to upper 50's to low 60's is about right. They won't need fertilizer until the first 2 true leaves come out. If you put them in this environment you will get nice stout plants. I know I'm on track when the tomato stems turn purple rather than green. Once you get the first true leaves, transplant your tomatoes and peppers into larger containers, one plant to a container, and start fertilizing or buy fertilized potting soil. Your tomatoes and peppers actually respond positively to having their roots pulled apart and will grow stouter and fuller, so I sow 2 seeds to a potting cell when starting my plants. This way when they get transplanted the roots that have woven together from the 2 plants get pulled apart and it stimulates the plants. Sounds wacky but it's true. | |
