I always attribute stretching to too much shade/not enough sun or too much N feed especially when root bound in the pots

when you plant them you can always plant them deeper by flexing the plant so that the root ball sides are parallel to the ground and the bottom of the hole and then the stem is curving 90 degrees up and out of the hole

then plant the root ball at the same depth as normal....some might just say why not just plant the root ball deeper instead of the 90 degree bend.....well you don't want the roots TOO deep
