40 lb oats are the standard weight for Canadian oats as harvested though the legal weight of a bushel measure is still 34 lbs. Thus that old 3 ton often hauled a 400 bushel load to the scale.

Lightest oats I ever grew were 30lbs, had a hard job getting them to auger(old six inch versatile) but the cows ate them and as the old cowboys said "made a turd"!
