Hi Lon,

My take is that electrical conductivity measurements by contact and non-contact (induction) methods are related to many different soil properties (e.g., salinity, moisture content, nitrate, clay content) and that these relationships are quite variable both spatially (from field to field) and temporally (from day to day)... but this doesn't mean that EC maps are foo foo dust unless they are misinterpreted/misrepresented.

The critical thing to understand is that EC measurements normally should not be viewed as an important soil property in and of themselves but rather as a low cost window into spatial variation in soil properties that is useful when interpreted in combination with other parameters that are better understood but often much more expensive to measure.

I am not an expert in EC but have read enough of the literature and talked to enough people to feel pretty confident saying that EC has value when used by agronomists that know how to use it in combination with other parameters.
