Talk to your landlord and ask him is he is willing to share in the cost of a transfer switch and installation by an electrician. Perhaps he would even be willing to let you pay your share by paying extra rent every month. If not, start saving your pennies and do it right. You have lives and property at stake here. Its not worth taking the chance. If I were your landlord and caught you running it like that I would run you down the road so quick it would make your head spin. He has a lot of liability in this situation. If you fry some lineman because you forgot to throw a switch he has liabilty.
