Subject: RE: applying fertilizer on snow

Hey Brewster,
First all, I would try to renegotiate with the fert dealer. Next, If cold is the issue, a blend of 85% UAN and 15% thiosol makes the blend have a salt out point down to 0 F. This is usually low enough not to cause problems. Next, I believe that the temp needs to be 50 degrees to release the urease enzyme, thus creating possibility for volatilization. (Check this out, but I believe this is correct). In your area, if the snow is melting and soaking into the ground at just above 32 degrees, then you should therorhetically be fine. Biggest concern would be run off if the ground is frozen and there is ALOT of snow melt. Many applicators in my area (and I believe yours too) don't mind running on some small amounts of snow. It sounds kinda scary to me, but I wouldn't mind trying it. On the good side, its easy to tell if you have nozzles plugged, as the streams do a good job of melting the snow - so I am told. Just my 2 cents. Please let us know the results.
