I believe the atmospheric air we breathe is about 70% or more nitrogen. So there is no shortage of nitrogen for microbes etc to use in breaking down any sort of residue.

You are correct Jim ! IF ??? 1. corn crop were grown every 5 years ! But the Intensity of 200 plus Bu. annually corn on corn The soil and soil Microbes are Starved for Food !!! and many times Oxygen if some form of Compaction exists ??? In My Opinion this is well documented when Farmers say they can not grow a crop of corn full term with out a side dress application of Nitrogen !!!

Where does the fencepost rot?

Above ground, or in the ground?
