Subject: Fall field work vs spring field work

Traverse City MI
What is everybody's opinion on fall ripping vs spring ripping. We currently rip in the spring because time is very short for us in the fall. Will the freeze thaw cycle in the winter here negate the effect of the deep tillage? Our ground can freeze quite deep here. We current rip, chisel plow, then field cultivate in the spring and I would like to go to a disk ripper and eliminate the chisel pass. Our ground ranges from clay to pretty light sand. Have any of you guys done something like this to eliminate a pass across the field?
