Subject: Re: Twin rows vs. 20" rows

We went to 20" corn for the first time this year. Looked at twin rows but wasn't impressed with the stagger in the fields that we looked at. Planter was cheaper but corn head was ore expensive but we were needing a new cornhead anyway & what we saved on the planter helped offset the additional cost of the planter. Figure if our corn will make 5bpa better than 30" corn that will pay the difference of the cost of the c.h. the 1st year.

I don't see where everyone says seed cost is higher for 20s than 30s. We were planting 38-40,000 in 30s & that's what we're planting in 20s. One production cost that is higher in 20s is insecticide, espeically if you're in a variant rootworn area like we are. Aztec, Force, & Fortress rates are based on 1,000 ft of row & not lbs/ac. With 20" rows you have 50% more rows per acre than with 30s so it takes more insecticide though it isn't 50% more as there is a max rate per yr limitation.

We spray with the row. Use a JD 6500 sprayer with 12.8 rear tires so they fit down the row. Only problem there is you cannot settup a 6500 on 120" row spacing. JD says 121" but it measures more like 123" which could down on side drift a little
