In my opinion....

Variety makes a difference.   Some varieties respond to increase population more than others.

Weather.... will make a difference.  But of course this is an "in hindsight" performance result and observation.  Guarantee me what the weather is going to do... and I can know whether to up or lower my population.

Fertility makes a difference.   Raise the population, with poor fertility... and I won't like the results.  Yield, and most certainly, profitability will suffer.   Great fertility may warrant increasing population.   But not necessarily.
