From the extreme rearward tilt of the bar in this picture I would guess that Bruce is probably trying to compensate for a lack of downpressure in some conditions. Notice the earlier pic doesn;t seem that way. The problem with doing this rather than adding more pressure is that it pulls the front blade out of the ground. That blade not only runs the deepest it really gets the tillage started. Again, I am not a fan of summer strip till demos because they don't really reflect the sort of conditions that are typical. The fact that 4 springs is even close at this time of the summer is probably a testament to Bruce's soil management. When we were running the other day in heavy wheat stubble in N IL we had about 400 lbs of down pressure on it, Bruce was at maybe 180.
