Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

Busted Piston - 1/13/2025 16:40 The queen of the house wants a central vac system. Any do’s or don’ts, brands to get or stay away from? This is a 2 story 5 bedroom house, I am fairly handy with most things and think I could handle the install just don’t want to learn the hard way if I don’t need to.

We installed one in our1974 ranch house when we remodeled and added on in1997. It's a DustCare brand. I alternate between loving it and hating it. I do appreciate the fact that all the dust and refuse is outside the house. We live on a gravel road and the more dust I can move back outside, the better. True statement that the hose is a PITA. There's a half-round bracket to store it on, but we don't really have a great place for that, so the hose and carpet tool live in a closet. We have quite a bit of laminate flooring, so a top feature for me is the dustpan built in in the toekick of the cabinets. Brush up the hard floor with a good broom and suck the dirt out to the canister with a bump of my toe. That's pretty slick.
