When I was a kid we lived in an old house that had a 3' thick rock wall foundation. The basement was always cool and damp with moisture seeping in. A neighbor stopped with a truck load of sacked potatoes so my parents bought 500 lbs. We laid some plywood on the basement floor on the north side of the house, and spread the potatoes out. Once in a while a potato that had gotten nicked when they harvested them would go bad so we had to check on them. It was cheap food, I still love potatoes.
My nephew went to a school for forestry. One day he and his college buddies were riding around when he pulled over to the side of the road. He got out and started picking up potatoes that had fallen off the trucks that were hauling potatoes at harvest. When the trucks turned a corner with a full heaped up load, a bunch of potatoes fell off on the side of the road. My nephew said "free potatoes are a great thing to a college student on a tight budget, leaves them more money to spend on beer".
