If the guy kept much of his 1000 lbs, he's probably going to find out a few things about potato storage. It's harder than you'd think to maintain the proper temperature in a house, fridge is too cold and even a cold pantry is too warm. Not to mention humidity, although russets are way tougher than white potatoes.

The fresh potato market has always been a volatile place. The reason there's so many from last year, is that two years ago the price was phenomenal. Last year there was 13% more acreage planted as a result, with the ensuing crash. Seeings as how they are perishable, this is how it ends sometimes.

When I was a young kid in the 80's I can remember a couple of times when the market crashed, guys went broke or walked away from a cellar full of potatoes. Makes a heck of a stench when they turn liquid and run out the doors.
