Well, my here's my answer in the form of a question...

Would it not be a good thing to be able to know when to put on a hedge and know when to lift a hedge at the best profitable time? 

You're partly right...chart patterns like triangles and wedges and such are subjective...taking the subjectivity out of the analysis is the only way to forecast.
