Kinda coincidental you bring this up, JC. I, too, have been reminiscing somewhat lately, and asked myself if there were a five year period I could do over again, when would it be. I kinda settled in on 1973-78 timeframe, 13 through 18 years old. Those for the most part were some of the funnest, carefree moments in my life, growing into adulthood on the farm.

That's interesting Boone.

I would have to say that 1972 - 1985 were the toughest for Me n Wife.
Left a good position in AgLending, bought my 1st farm in 1970 on
Contract- rough old Hill farm for $250/a - $8000 down 5% contract.
Bought another 200a in 1971 with the rest of cash savings $12,000
Down. Everyone that knew who I was just knew I had lost my mind
And was on the way to going Broke!!! All I knew was I was going to
Start farming.

I knew enough about farm lending to go to FHA to get funds to start
Farming. Got the operating loan to buy used equipment and
Livestock to start - including 8 milk cows, 10 sows to farrow
And seed n fertilizer to plant a crop.

Now, those were the toughest years of Our lives Wife included.
In 1981, the neighbor farm was auctioned off, I had the financing
Lined up to buy it.

At the Auction, with the Farm Credit Guy standing beside me,
As the bid crossed $1200/a. I literally froze as The Good lord
Stopped me from bidding.

I give Him all the credit for saving my financial future,
As that additional debt would most likely caused us to fail in
Those resulting hard years go the 80's.

So, while you were enjoying those "carefree moments"
of Your life, I was litterly working my butt off.

But we Survived all the crazy thingsI have done
And now enjoying the fruits of our labor.

No more Milk cows on these cold winter morn,
No more hogs to chase, no more riding that ole 560
With a heat houser and grinder mixer down thx roadto the other farm
to feed the hogs.

Life is Good!!!!!

:-)))

:

Those “carefree” years you seem to be chastising me for were my junior high through my high school years. I would certainly not wish stress, worry and fret upon a teenager. I graduated in ‘78, started my farming career my senior year, right at the threshold of the winds of change that were on the horizon, but not yet clear what was about to come. I had enough stress, worry and fret over the next ten years after graduation to make a billy goat puke.
