Grain is trucked to the river. If it’s put on a train it usually goes all the way to the port by rail. Rail rates for the elevators that use it are about 1/3 price of what the same distance costs in areas of the US that don’t have the river barges as competition, so those rates would rise immediately if that competition was removed.
