S Illinois
I am willing to wager farm consolidation is by far the biggest factor when it comes to dead towns in your area rather than globalization.

Blue collar jobs were never available like candy at any time save for immediately following WW2 in S Il so don’t try and make that the bar. Economic needs/demands change and with it the economic health. High oil prices along with labor intensive coal mining led to strong prosperity/employment. But oil prices collapsed and automation continued to advance, expansion cheaper more abundant coal sources all lowered the amount of labor needed.
