| I think this modification got started with the old 1400 series combines - they had a paddle fan that didn't give adequate air flow and the bottom sieve stuck in to the fan housing enough that airflow to the chaffer was limited. By opening up the front of the sieve more air flow could get at the front of the chaffer. I tried it with mine but have had to cover the first foot or so of the airfoil chaffer to keep trash coming off the auger bed from falling right through the front of the bottom sieve. The later machines like the 2188 have a better fan that's supposed to provide adequate air flow without modification.
