Subject: From the (-------) horse's mouth

Michigan
Genuity™ SmartStax combines multiple modes of action for the broadest spectrum of insect protection and weed control to enable the highest level of success on-farm. Multiple modes of action present the strongest defense against the development of insect resistance, providing the most viable option to reduce the structured refuge in the Corn and Cotton Belt areas of the United States.

Additionally, reduced refuge to 5 percent marks an important turning point in the viable development of a refuge in a bag (RIB) concept. In order to make a blended seed product useful to farmers, Monsanto’s first priority was to get regulatory approval for a reduced refuge to 5 percent. A structured farm refuge of 5 percent for both above-and below-ground pests is a key enabler of the RIB concept to maximize the value for a farmer. Monsanto is the inventor of the RIB concept and has been testing this concept for more than a decade. We have an extensive number of field trials under way for the 2009 season to support these evaluations.

Q: What is the difference between Genuity™ SmartStax and Optimum
® AcreMax1? A: DuPont’s Optimum AcreMax 1 is a very different product than Genuity™ SmartStax. Unlike Genuity™ SmartStax, Optimum AcreMax 1 does not have multiple modes of action either above or below ground. The proven dual effective dose strategy developed by Monsanto and Dow through Genuity™ SmartStax is the industry standard for above- and below-ground protection requirements and significantly reduces the risk of insect resistance.

In a survey of more than 300 farmers, nearly 80 percent said a 5 percent refuge would enable easier and more convenient refuge management. The 5 percent refuge for SmartStax is the only reduced refuge system for corn that applies to both above- and below-ground pests.

The AcreMax 1 product concept has not been registered by the EPA and cannot be commercialized until EPA registration is obtained. Even if approved as proposed, AcreMax 1 would still require a 20 percent structured refuge for above-ground pests such as corn borer, and would not make refuge compliance easier for the farmer.

Q: How does a farmer benefit from a reduced refuge?

A: A 5 percent refuge for Genuity™ SmartStax in the Corn Belt means a farmer will retrieve 75 percent of the acres formerly left to refuge so that these acres can be planted to the most productive hybrids protected by Genuity™ SmartStax. This significant reduction in a farmers’ refuge requirement together with the greater protection from yield-robbing insects and weeds means that farmers will benefit in cost savings, planting simplification and increased yield. This is the most reliable way for farmers to produce more with less input. In addition, this reduced refuge will be easier for farmers and will further reduce applied insecticide use, reduce risks and enhance the long-term durability of the technology.

Q: What is refuge in a bag and will it be offered with Genuity™ SmartStax?

A: Refuge in the bag (RIB) is a blended seed system that allows a farmer to plant one bag of seed that contains all of the necessary refuge seed for both above-ground and below-ground requirements. In order to bring a blended seed product to market our first priority was to get U.S EPA approval for a reduced refuge to 5 percent. We believe that properly deployed RIB has the potential to create additional value for farmers and we have been testing RIB technology for more than a decade. An extensive number of field trials are under way for the 2009 season. Monsanto will make a final commercial decision on Genuity™ SmartStax RIB after all yield trials are analyzed late this year.

Q: Wouldn’t a RIB with a seed blend higher than 5 percent still provide farmers a yield advantage?

A: Farmer convenience is a key driver for RIB, but a blended seed product must maintain the yield advantage farmers desire. Monsanto has been testing RIB seed blends for more than a decade. Only dual modes of action for above- and below-ground pests achieved with SmartStax could allow the yield benefit. Increased yields are jeopardized with a RIB of greater than 5 percent.
