Near-north Ontario, French River | Word of caution, unless you have a lot of small cottage style wineries in your area , a one acre patch of wine grapes may be hard to market. Most wineries probably wont want to deal with such a small volume of grapes from a single producer. Yields will vary from 1-7 tons per acre depending of variety/weather etc, and segregating such a small volume may be more trouble then its worth to a winery. If on the other hand you could market to the 'home brew' type crowd it might be a viable enterprise. Remember its going to take you at least 3 years to get a crop, and in those three years you will have to prune, spray, etc.... I beleive the last I heard a guy will have 15-17,000 invested in an acre of grapes before they even get their first crop. This is all assuming you are in this for the money, if its just for personal enjoyment ( and you intend to break even at best), then have at it . Good luck |
