Also, have a torch handy nearby. If you can't weld all the way around, get the torch out, and heat the area you welded (from the opposite side) until the entire shaft just starts to glow red, then let it cool SLOWLY. This should prevent warping.
If you have to put several beads, weld a little, and peen it, that will also minimize warping.
My best luck is just with E70XXXXX welding wire in my wire feed welder. Can be solid or flux core. If you use flux core, don't chip the slag until you heat the backside it won't warp as much. If you can't heat the backside, solid wire is better, and start peening the instant you finish the bead, starting where you started the weld, and working down the bead. Lots of quick taps are better than heavy handed banging.
With a stick welder, I like using 7018. If you use a deep penetrating rod like a 6011, it will warp easier. | |
