Subject: RE: Crop Rotation Options After Drought Corn

Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
I have drilled wheat in after chopping, discing or otherwise removing the corn. I have had 50 bushel wheat the following year and I have also had wheat not come up until the next spring and not make 10. Advantage of wheat you have an insurable crop out there this fall. Then you can decide in the spring as to what to do.
10 years ago I was faced with a similar situation we have this year. I left the corn stand. Soil test said I had 75 lbs of residual N. I added a reduced rate of fertilizer. Sprayed as I normally would and planted corn. Raised some pretty good corn the following year when it rained more.
Main thing I have learned in a drought is maintain your cover. You never know when your going to get anything to grow and bare soils blow.
