What I have done to maintain my sanity with inconsistent grading is just consider that another element of the price they offer you. It's just another way of doing business.

Every element of transaction in farming has inconsistencies. There can be some large variations in supplier costs relating to seed, fertilizer, chemical, equipment, etc. These can vary based on who you talk to, who you are, what volume of business you provide.

But there is no law per se on what they dock when buying from the farmer. And if you bought a set of screens and a scale you would find how easy it is to come up with weight that isn't considered grain.
