Ft. Ripley MN
Never ran the numbers but I was just thinking the other day if a guy could get away from hay completely.

Keep chopping corn silage like we are but add a rye crop in there to either spring graze or chop followed by corn.

Switch the hay acres to corn and rye. Combine the cash crop and bale the straw and stalks up for bedding and filler.

I would sure think a cash crop as well as a “feed” crop would pay more then a hay crop.

We aren’t in high bushel crop country like iowa and southern Minnesota where I know it’s done. I just think the economics of running cow/calf pairs is changing quick where the traditional system isn’t cutting it anymore.

Just some rainy day thoughts I had last week…. Maybe someone does it or knows how to make it work
