Brandon, MS | I definitely plan on using less hay this year. Not so much from necessarily a cost standpoint, but from a utilization and labor standpoint.
Did soil tests and will have the pastures in shape this fall. Plan on planting a mix of mostly rye grass, but with some hairy vetch, turnips, radish, buckwheat, clover, and maybe something else I can find. Won't plan it all for winter grazing, but will plant most of the pastures.
Hope to get some fall grazing into the new year. Probably figure on having to feed in the middle of winter (which is February here), and then back on grass as soon as enough shows up in the field to eat.
Another poster said it best. Winter grazing is great if the stuff grows, but if it doesn't you have to have a back up plan. | |
