Those screws probably aren't soft metal. If you heat red hot with a torch and let cool, slow, it may make it soft enough to drill. Try a left handed bit.
May have to just torch off the old piece. See what the coupling costs and figure how much time to put in it. Sometimes, just cut the old piece off and put on new is the cheapest and the less cussing.
