Oklahoma | Have a old mist blower that I am trying to upgrade with a new pump. Old pump is held into PTO/Pulley Shaft with a set screw that seems to be rusted in to the shaft (Pump shaft slides inside PTO Shaft, set screw is on the outside). Tried the "Hagen Brew" for about a week and still broke the allen wrench trying to get it started. Had a mechanic friend over and asked for his thoughts which were to drill it out as "that screw is soft metal". That was total BS, I have tried drilling the screw out and I can't get any bits to start cutting into the metal and when I have gotten lucky, I get a few fines like a grinder throws off. Tried several different brands of bits and different sizes and get no where.
So outside of the idea of heating with a torch and hoping to not warp the shaft, is there any other ideas for getting this pile apart? FWIW, all the other set screws busted loose after a little of the "hagen brew", but this one has been a nightmare.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. | |
