Quite a few companies actually do this, the big thing is you want to research it very well before putting money in to it. It may be a legitimate business that is just starting out on its own, and the way to do that is to have multiple owners help pay for the well. As the others have said, there is always a possibility of losing your money. A dry hole or even a poor producing well can cost more than it makes. Usually those are abandoned after a few years. There were companies who started out in the Bakken doing this, and now they are quite successful.
I have actually thought about trying to start my own exploration company, but I am running into the same problem of I don’t have the money to do anything on my own.
