Subject: RE: Time to start raising chickens?

Western Oregon
We keep 4-6 chickens, seems one is always wanting to set, so we let them. So far we have had 26 hatch. I usually only leave them 6 eggs. That is enough at a time for us. I have Buff Orpingtons and don't buy any feed, just oat screenings from the seed cleaner and what they get in the pastures. I do heat some mash in the winter on the wood stove to keep them laying.

Myself I would just as soon eat an old hen with dumplings as bought mushy fryer parts. I do like baked whole yard bird....James
