East Central Nebraska | Back then was a whole different way of farming. Grandpa talked of fall plowing everything and then many passes with the disk. And then cultivated. It was a good year if you could make 3 passes in the corn. Goal was 2 for sure with the cultivator. Comparing 2012 to 20 years before that, if I would have farmed in 2012 like I did in 1991, I would not have raised a crop in 2012. I didn't plow back in 1991, but sure had many tillage passes before planting. Grandpa said 2012 was dryer than the year he began farming which was in the dust bowl days I think he said 1933 or 1934. Last year was really dry for our area. My bean yield last year was slightly lower that 2012. I had around 3.5 inches of Rain last year basically between Apr 1 and Sept 1. Corn yield was way down too, but amazing that i still managed 130 average. | |
