Really doubt it’s that way unless these “ships” are really small, like 100 passengers each or something and are running together. Can’t say I have seen that.
Cruise ships check passengers going off and back on the ship. You stay with THAT ship. You have your belongings and your room on that ship. There is no boarding another ship.
