It is simply a matter of diminishing returns. If soil needs drainage the fastest payback may be on 60 to 80 foot spacing. That doesn't mean that narrower doesn't pay but not as fast. The other question is 40 ft may be optimum for your soil but you could do more acres at 60 with the same footage.Another factor is it requires less effort per foot to install on narrow spacing. Less moving, less time locating old tile etc. It also is easier to install on 40 ft and be done compared to installing on 80 and coming back to split.
Here an example of the what goes into the spacing decision. In 2014 we had a very wet spring with a lot of prevent plant. A farm completely pattern filed on 80 ft spacing( standard from the 70s thru the early nineties) got planted and raised a great crop. A farm pattern filed on 3/4 of its area 60 ft apart either didn't get planted or was partially planted and the rest ppd. Same footage either way. A farm completely pattern filed on 60 ft spacing got planted for sure and raised an even better crop.
