E. Kansas | Around here it looks like a good amount of the dirt came from close proximity to the roadbed. But the large rocks in the roadbed and ballast were hauled in. No rocks like that along the roadbed for quite a ways, just dirt.
We own land that had an 1850s-built railroad through it. Even though it's been gone for years, there are a few places where the large rocks for the base are still present. I would liked to have seen how all that material was gathered up, loaded, moved and built into a rail bed in the 1850s.
