In Colorado, the government gave the railroad every other section of land twenty miles on both sides of the railroad to build the railroad. (Odd number sections) The railroad used the dirt from the sides of the railroad to build the road bed. You can see where they got the dirt today. Also the dirt they cut the hills down went to the low places to fill in. The railroad sold the sections of land but kept the minerals.
