Centralia, MO		A lot of good advice above but I would qualify all of it like this................

1. Early in the season the birds tend to hold a little tighter so you get close to them before they fly. 20 gauge will work good in this scenario as well as a 12 gauge, both in improved or modified choke.

2. Late in the season the birds have been hunted more and tend to get up further away. If you're really quick, a 20 gauge modified or full choke will reach them but not as many pellets in the pattern. A 12 gauge modified or full choke would be the optimal weapon of choice then.

I haven't taken into consideration the differences between 2 & 3/4, 3 or 3 & 1/2" loads though.

Personally, I've killed a ton of quail and pheasants with my Remington 1100 improved cylinder. A few times, late in the season, I've had to pull out the Remington 870 full choke w/ 3" shells.
