Driftless SW Wisconsin

Bruce,

I cant tell how many row units you have with springs vs air bags. Or how many springs were attached on the spring units.  In my post from Thursday in N ILL wheat stubble the strips looked great even in the obvious combine tire tracks.

The difference is that we had the airbags at 70 psi which is a lot more than the springs can provide.  The clods were not bad.  You do NOT want too fine a seed bed type consisitency for fall strips, no matter what machine makes them.  They will crust and generally not be good places to plant in the spring as if a bit rougher surface is left.  You do not want however, as you point out above, huge chucks which will leavre valleys and air pockets to plant into in the spring.

Many of our customers who strip into whaeat stubble for corn make a pass in the fall to create a black strip thenb gop back over themn in the spring with N asnd make a very nice place to plant early.

Looks like a great day. I'd love to see some pics of the soil pit and Jodie's analysis.
