I would have to agree with you on your observations of the two different types of strip till. It would be interesting to see how those units would have done in our sandy-loam soils up here in the sticks. Soil types from our neck of the woods compared to Bruce's are as differnet as night and day. That heavy black ground seems to be a PITA to get penetration with a coulter setup, and to get a nice even seedbed with the shank. Wish we had more strip till up here to have a field day and see how everybody stacks up in the conditions provided.
We would drive by fields being worked in the fall in Southern MN/Northern IA and notice how black it was, but never had it in my hands...impressive to say the least! I can see where compaction comes into play in that soil type compared to our loams up here being a little more forgiving.
