South Central MN | Would make sense that those packets in a store aren't the commercial varieties... Some seeds might be, others probably not. Some stuff I will get from the store but others are ordered online from smaller seed companies that aren't out for the commercial sales.
Guess someone is better off with those heirloom types? They should at least have some flavor to them. (Usually what a smaller variety preservation minded seed company puts out anyways.)
Most squash "here" that I have grown aren't bad, but we have much higher OM% soil than a lot of other parts of the country, as in 4% OM for us is low. Some ground here is 7%+, not counting the peat patches that are 9%+. All plants want to do is reproduce and they will try very hard to do so, and if they aren't in good conditions everything they have will go to the seeds, which might mean a bad tasting squash but hey, at least the seeds inside will germinate right? | |
