You wouldn't add suphate to the soil to react with the carbonates because it's already oxidized. You would add elemental sulfer and that would be oxidized and react in order to lower the pH of the soil after you have used up the carbonates. It's that oxidization that is the important thing.
Your test sounds low for bicarbonates as far as having a general field problem. I'm guessing they likely vary greatly across the field and you likely see spots of chlorosis.
Broadcasting high rates of elemental sulfer in such a case would be dangerous in that you could actually end up with low pH areas that require lime. | |
