Northeast Missouri | I started three years ago at the age of 19 with 6 acres of rented ground, this year I'll harvest just shy of 200. The first year I traded my boss at the time labor for use of his equipment, I got very lucky and had a bumper crop and good prices. I made enough to put a down payment on an old tractor and found a 6 row planter for under a grand. (Don't compare yourself to your neighbors established operation, you don't need shiny paint, you just need reliable and affordable.) Find a specialty crop and use social media to market it (for me that has been popcorn) for you it may be "grass fed beef" or something similar. There is a lot of opportunity out there if you are willing to chase it. If you want to make it work you will have to give up the fun nights out on the town with your friends and spending money on vacations becuase all of those hours and dollars will have to go into your business if you truly want it to be successful.
Your two best friends will be your banker and your calculator. I highly recommend going to college - not only will it provide a fallback if things don't work out, it also helps open your eyes to the real world. You make a bunch of amazing connections if you go to the right events and join the right clubs. Goodluck!!
