West Central IL | Can you buy in on the cattle, or add to it with some more cattle and help out more with your labor? If you can get the 100 rented cheap, or when handed down you'll have a place to start. You may have to have a 2nd job for a while, while you are starting out, unless you can live on pennies. I think the farm hand option is a good one for someone starting out. Like said, best if you can find someone with no kids or at least someone with kids not interested in farming. You may get to continue when the boss retires, or you may get a chance to buy out the kids later on. Also if there's any rented ground involved, you may get to continue farming it. I'd say at a minimum you need some ag financial training these days. Some with the finances, and then some with marketing. |
