I remember the ice house here. Fill the pit beneath it with snow about this time of year and cover it with sawdust so it would last into the summer. Mostly for storing cans of milk or cream before shipping. Meat was mostly preserved by "canning". Beef and chicken in quart sealer jars stored in the basement. Tasted great!
