Those that did not might pay with their lives if they got botulism organisms growing in canned goods. That's why the extension service used to give classes and there were "home demonstration agents" (my grandmother was one before she married) to show how to properly can and preserve foods.
Problem is there are heat stable toxins that can cause food poisoning once the food grows enough germs. Thankfully those aren't usually deadly. | |
