I am a very small time farmer. I farm around 120 acres of my own ground so I guess you could call me a hobby farmer. My family also owns a large tract of land that we rent out to a local operator many would consider a BTO. I lately have decided to add another small tractor to use for planting and spraying so I have been perusing the many auctions looking for a decent 100hp older tractor 966. 986. 4230. Last couple of auctions I have been to with decent machines on them the tractors brought way more than I thought they were worth. The last one in particular after the hammer dropped the auctioneer said I was going into a nice collection!! This REALLY rubbed me wrong. I have been listening to guys whine about the farm economy for months if not years and some fool has money to blow on a tractor that will just sit in a shed for him and his buddies to stare at!!! Give me a break!! I just lost a ton of sympathy for our tenant when he starts whining about the rent.

You laid out my story at point of time in my life 5 years ago. Same ac. Looking for an older tractor. I wanted a collectible tractor to plant with as well due to the good reputation of a 20 series deere and being a collectible the depreciation should be $0.

After watching for close to 2 years for the right tractor I went to Mecum Auction 1.5 hrs away to bid on a tractor similar to what I wanted. 4620 powershift all though it had a cab and I wanted open station. But it was in really nice condition so I bid clear up $2000 over what I told myself my max bid was and was second bidder. It obviously went to a collector and my drive home was kind of a pissy one with the waste of a day and actually had a “come to Jesus” talk with God about if I am supposed to be buying machinery or not.

About 2 months later I found the exact tractor I wanted a little closer to home on tractor house for 3k less than I bid at Mecum. Open station powershift... a real gem. I found it online and was in contact immediately. Got it bought and included trucking in the price. Wrote the check the day the ad came out in the magazine and the seller said he got multiple calls after due to the magazine. I couldn’t be happier with the tractor.

Put your trust in God’s plan for your life. He has a better plan for you then you could think up. The best things in my life happen when I’ve exausted myself with my plans and trust God... something has always come out of the blue much better than I expected whether it was the tractor, same story with my wife as well as rented ground.

This is the 5th year with my tractor and planter and last year it planted over 550 ac
