Sorry, that post was longer than it should have been and was probably difficult to wade through.

The main thing is that if you ever want to send a file to someone else, it will likely make their life a lot easier if you make sure you save it as a .doc file type rather than a .wps or .odt file type. This will make it so that anyone who has almost any brand of word processor capable of opening your file without any hassle. Essentially what I'm saying is that even if you use OpenOffice, you're still going to have to save it as a .doc (file, save as, then select .doc from the "save as type" drop box). You can do this with Works as well.

The primary advantage of OpenOffice in your situation is that you won't have a problem pasting stuff from Internet Explorer in it since that is something you were having difficulties with while using Works. I feel that there are many other good reasons to have OpenOffice, but that's the main practical one for you at this moment since Works is also saving as a .doc.
