Sw. Ill | The thing about the explorers is the transmissions. Google 2002 explorer problems. I think at one time it was car and drivers or some other review companies #1 worst vehicle to own. They said to avoid it like the plague.
So just make sure the transmission has been rebuilt and you should be ok. I had a 91 explorer and even them old ones had issues it lost the transmission around 140k.
One big reason is people try to tow pontoon boats on the weekends, but also just a junky design. The 4.0 motors are fine. The 302s are common also and are good but not much torque.
I think you would be best off to find a manual, they are kinda rare though and only came with the 4.0.
Other option would be a jeep cherokee they are cheap too. And you get a good straight 6 engine. Plus all the aftermarket off road parts support that the fords do not have.plus you have a solid front axle not the junky ford ifs.
