Subject: RE: depreciation/appreciation in cattle

Southwest OK
Wally is a business partner, friend and mentor of mine. I use his philosophy in my cow herd.

At pregging, everything is mouthed, all 5's are sorted off to be sold. All heifer calves are kept and exposed for 45 days. All open cows are turned back out with a bull and marketed as fall calvers.

Downside is most of my herd has a high nutrient requirement, I calve out a lot of heifers, bulls can't stay long, I can't have any favorites, and it is fairly management intensive.

Upside is cash flow, balance sheet, and profit.

As Wally would say, "Know yourself and what your comfortable doing before you start something new."
