If you have an external drive and running OS X, use Time Machine. Your backups are always current. Although it may take a few hours to restore the whole system from a Time Machine backup, it's far better than not having anything current.

Another good bit of advice that I have implemented - I partitioned my external into two drives. Copy your DVD to one partition and use the other for Time Machine. That way, you can boot from one partition and restore from the other in case of a system failure. No need to dig the DVD out from storage! :)
